Undoubtedly a still life: a wooden bench in the sunlight in the middle of a meadow—were it not for the short text and the bank logos burned into the backrest. In German, both the term ‘Bank’ and the adjective ‘gemein’ are used ambiguously. ‘Bank’ stands for a bench and also for a financial institution. In connection with the logos engraved in the wood, the object ‘bench’ is transformed into the institution ‘bank’. In this work, ‘common’ is used on the one hand in the sense of ordinary, on the other hand in the sense of indelicate or indecent (business). Thus we see here an ordinary bench, but at the same time also the indecent bank and associate it with business practices of whatever kind, be they fees, credit costs, interest on earnings, returns, etc.
