In Dante’s Divine Comedy in Paradise, the white rose of heaven is the highest seat of the saints (formed by the reflection of the divine light of the crystal sky). The view of the sky together with the rose of heaven represents this seat, even if in medieval cosmology it was actually the highest part of heaven above the earth. The ‘sky rose’ (viscaria oculata) is a subspecies of the petunia.

The photograph is of the sky over Callantsoog, North Holland, and the work is therefore part of the ‘Playing around with Callantsoog skies’ series. The SKY series explores the theme of “SKY” on three levels: visual, written, and sound.
