G-sus left Birmingham long time ago

G-sus left white Birmingham, Alabama—a city in the American Bible Belt that still hasn’t overcome its old Southern mentality, where geographic segregation persists to this day—a long time ago. Not just when the economy collapsed or during the racial upheaval of the 1960s. Probably as early as its founding: established after the abolition of slavery, yes, but by former slaveholders who perpetuated the same inequalities. At the very latest, though, he threw in the towel in the ’60s—disgusted by the bigoted piety of the white church(es) and their grip on public and political life, their endorsement of white supremacy and segregation.
