Spitzweg reimagined and his poor poet linked to Edgar Allan Poe. “The Poor POE-t”—Spitzweg’s painting, presented as an old photograph of Poe in his humble Boston apartment—does, however, contain a few inconsistencies, and a certain absurdity cannot be denied. Poe records his works on an electronic notebook, and a flat-screen TV by the fireplace shows a commercial for the writers’ association “Pen.” But how are the notebook and TV powered? The candle as a light source suggests that there is no electricity. And pizza delivery services were probably rare in the mid-19th century …
